Covid-19 Response

In the current month of August 2020, Uganda has experienced an exponential increase in the Number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, figure below. Kampala, the capital, where Makerere University is located, has the highest number of cases and death.

Testing for COVID-19 is the most effective control strategy WHO has recommended. Kampala is testing less than 10% of the required numbers. Fortunately, Makerere University has a COVID-19 Accredited testing laboratory in the CHS that works with the University Health Services in detection of COVID-19. So far we have tested over 1,500 individuals, majority being diplomats and flight travelers. The laboratory has also successfully performed two National Rapid Assessment Surveys (total 40,000 tests) that have guided the response to COVID-19.

On 23rd August, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor indicated that one faculty member had tested positive for COVID-19 and issued guidelines to protect the University community. Based on this background, the COVID-19 testing Laboratories at the CHS, the University Health Services and University Management would like to offer a Test, Track, Isolate and Manage (TTIM) strategy to ensure the University Community is protected from COVID-19. The aim is to minimize COVID-19 spread and detect the infected early and avoid morbidity and mortality.

APPROACH

Voluntary Screening of University Staff

The screening team plans to visit all the University Colleges and units on planned days (schedule attached) and offer voluntary screening. Due to resource constraints, we should focus on staff members first and if positive we screen the family members. All staff are encouraged to test. Such surveys will be arranged regularly.

Testing for staff and family members with symptoms

All staff and family members with COVID-19 (Flu-like) symptoms should go to the University hospital for testing. This should be an ongoing surveillance exercise.

Contact tracing of positive cases and family member testing

For any positive cases detected, we propose to test their contacts including family members.

When one tests positive

When one tests positive, we will link them to the Ministry of Health management system. We will endeavor to ensure the best treatment is offered to our community
