Who we are

The Department of Immunology &Molecular Biology is located at the 3rd floor-Pathology/Microbiology Building, Old Mulago Hill Road. This Department operates under the School of Biomedical Sciences, Makerere University College of Health Sciences-Kampala, Uganda. It constitutes of members who have extra ordinary expertise in Immunology, Molecular Biology, host and pathogen genetics, functional genomics and Clinical Microbiology, besides having a lot of experience in basic sciences, infectious disease research and biomedical research. The department follows the mission, vision, mandate, and core values of Makerere University that with several commitments to support academic excellence and innovations in Africa, as well as providing innovative teaching, learning, research and services responsive to National and Global needs. In the same spirit, as a group that operates under MakCHS, we always strive to contribute towards scientific research and also other services to the community to avail intervention.

We offer degree programs at graduate level where you can earn a Master’s or a PhD degree. These programs are;Master of Science in Bioinformatics, Master of Science in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology, PhD Programmes in Bioinformatics, Immunology, Molecular Biology, among others. We also facilitate courses under undergraduate academic programs; such as Fundamentals of Immunology and Fundamentals of Molecular Biology, as well as field attachment trainings to in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genomics and Bioinformatics. We also offer short courses as detailed in the section of short courses on this website.

We have faculty with widely varying research interests in the areas which include although are not limited to; clinical Immunology, diagnostic immunology, molecular immunology, immunogenomics, infectious disease research, cancer immunology, molecular biology, molecular diagnostics, functional genomics, human andmicrobial genetics, bioinformatics, clinical microbiology and biorepository sciences. Because we have such a diverse faculty with such varying interests we are able to offer studies in just about anything that can be thought of in the field of genomics, genetics, molecular biology and immunology.

And as you might guess, we have research grants from a variety of credible institutions such as; the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, European Union, Grand Challenges, and so on. We also have funds from many private foundations and industrial firms, and thus many of our graduate students may receive monetary support from some of these funds. We have also established state-of-the-art facilities, including, Bioinformatics Laboratory, Genomics and Sequencing Laboratories, Molecular Biology and Immunology Laboratories, Mycobacteriology facilities and the H3Africa Biorepository facility. We also have an off-site compass at Kasangati which is approximately 14km from our main compass.
